Frances McCain was born in York, Pennsylvania and grew up in New York, Illinois and Colorado in addition to California. She graduated from Ripon College with a BA in Philosophy, and from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (Stage 69.)[2] She completed a master's degree in psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies in 2000.
Frances has enjoyed a distinguished career in theater, televisionand film. Her career began on Broadway in Woody Allen’s PLAY IT AGAIN SAM and over the years she has worked consistently in theater, both regional theater and main stage houses in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles; notably at the Ahmanson Theater as Stella opposite Jon Voigt and Faye Dunaway in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and as a company member and teacher with The American Conservatory Theatre.
McCain came to television stardom as Barbara Apple in the series APPLE’S WAY and has made numerous appearances on TV over the years in every genre including miniseries WASHINGTON BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, THE ROCKFORD FILES, THREE’S COMPANY, THE BOB NEWHART SHOW, PBS’s THE WAR WIDOW and a filmed live performance of ALL THE WAY HOME with Sally Field and William Hurt.
Her film career began in Albert Brook’s REAL LIFE, and she is most notably remembered as the Iconic 80’s Mom: Stella Baines in BACK TO THE FUTURE, Lynn Peltzer in GREMLINS, and as Kevin Bacon’s mom in FOOTLOOSE, also appearing in STAND BY ME and SCREAM.
